Zhayao Fm
Type Locality and Naming
It was named by the Geological College of Changchun in 1961, and was first cited publicly by the Geological Bureau of Liaoning Province. The naming section is located in the Zhayao area of Wafangdian (previously Fuzhou) County, Liaoning Province.
Synonym: (砟窑组)
Lithology and Thickness
Composed mainly of grey and grey-black conglomerates, pebble-bearing conglomerates, sandstones, siltstones, mudstones, carbonaceous shales and thin coal beds, intercalated occasionally with limestone and marl lenses, with a thickness of over 190 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Its basal part is in an unconformable contact with the underlying Cambrian limestones; or unconformably on the Wafangdian Fm of ?Toarcian?.
Upper contact
Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Guiyunhua Fm. It is sporadically exposed but covered directly by the Quaternary System in most areas.
Regional extent
It is distributed in the Zhayao region east of the China Changchun Railway, including the Xiaoxingjiagou, Dengtun, Dagumiao, Wangjiatun and Tangjia areas.

Fossils
It yields bivalves as represented by the Pseudocardinia-Psilunio assemblage, which comprises 9 species as represented by Pseudocardinia ventricosa, 3 species as represented by Tutuella chaohlovi, as well as Psilunio spp.; gastropods as represented by Bithynia sp.; vertebrates as represented by Manchurodon simpliedens; a small amount of plants such as Equisetum sp., Cladophlebis sp., Ginkgo ex gr. sibirica, Baiera sp., Sphenobaiera sp., Phoenicopsis angustifolia and Czekanowskia rigida; as well as spore-pollen fossils as represented by the Cyathidites-Asseretospora-Pseudopicea assemblage.

Depositional setting
The formation represents fluvial-lacustrine and swamp-facies deposits formed in the intermontane basins.
